The problem
Personal life operations and household data are chronically fragmented across walled gardens and brittle consumer SaaS tools. Financial aggregators harvest and monetize transaction data; medical records reside in disparate clinic portals; vehicle warranties and insurance renewals get lost in email inboxes; and household logistics (pantry restocking, utility consumption, kids' daily routines) exist on disconnected note apps or paper whiteboards.
Commercial ERPs are designed for enterprise accounting and are far too bloated for domestic engineering. I needed a single, private, self-hosted system that treats personal life management with enterprise rigor: rigorous double-entry bookkeeping, strict schema validation, encrypted document archiving, and automated alert engines—without paying subscription fees or leaking family data.
The solution: Prabandh Modular Monolith
I architected Prabandh as a unified modular monolith powered by FastAPI and PostgreSQL. In late 2026, the standalone Kubera financial platform was merged directly into Prabandh, creating a cohesive Life OS with clean domain boundaries across three primary clusters:
1. Financial Intelligence & Wealth (Kubera Core)
- Khata (Double-Entry Ledger): Strict debit/credit accounting with immutable journal entries, multi-currency valuation, automated transaction splitting across categories, and account balance reconciliation.
- Milan (Statement Ingestion Engine): Regex and heuristic parsers for bank PDFs, credit card CSV statements, and UPI exports with rule-based merchant categorization and duplicate detection.
- Nivesh & Bachat (Investment Portfolio): Multi-asset wealth tracker covering equities, mutual funds, EPF/PPF, Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB), and fixed deposits with automated XIRR calculation, dividend tracking, and rebalancing alerts.
- Karz & Sampatti (Debt & Assets): Complete loan amortization schedules (home, vehicle, personal), prepayment simulations, interest vs. principal projections, and real estate asset tracking.
- Kar (Tax Compliance & Shielding): Indian tax engine evaluating Old vs. New regime trade-offs, Section 80C/80D utilization, Section 24 housing interest exemptions, and capital gains tax harvest monitoring.
2. Household Logistics, Fleet & Utilities
- Vaahan (Fleet & Vehicle Manager): Fuel logs, mileage efficiency analytics, scheduled maintenance intervals, parts replacement logs, and proactive alerts for insurance renewals, road taxes, and PUC certificates.
- Sadhan / Urja (Utilities & Subscriptions): Utility consumption telemetry (electricity, water, broadband), recurring subscription audits, bill payment tracking, and contract expiry alerts.
- Rasoi (Pantry & Inventory): Household grocery and consumable stock monitor with dynamic consumption forecasts, expiration warnings, and automated restock lists.
3. Family Records, Health & Next-Gen Interfaces
- Dastavej (Encrypted Document Vault): Secure local digital archive for national IDs (Aadhaar, PAN, Passports), property titles, insurance policies, warranties, and certificates with metadata tagging and expiry alerts.
- Swasthya / Aarogya (Health & Medical Dossier): Family medical records repository capturing prescription histories, diagnostic lab results, vitals trends, vaccination schedules, and health insurance claim trails.
- Buddhi (Education & Academic Milestones): School curriculum tracking, exam timetables, fee cycle reminders, and milestone tracking.
- Balka (Dedicated Kids Tablet Kiosk): A lightweight, distraction-free touchscreen interface designed specifically for a dedicated wall/desk tablet. Features a live hero timetable card, daily morning/evening routine checklists, and interactive school bag packing guides.

Engineering Challenges & Design Decisions
Building a multi-domain Life OS presents distinct architectural hurdles:
- Domain Separation without Microservice Sprawl: Rather than running 11 independent containers, Prabandh runs as a modular monolith. Each domain has its own schema definitions, isolated router namespaces (
/api/v1/kubera,/api/v1/dastavej,/api/v1/vaahan, etc.), and Alembic migration streams. - Financial Invariants: Financial integrity is enforced via database-level triggers and append-only journal tables. Entries can never be deleted—corrections require compensating entries, guaranteeing a fully auditable trial balance.
- Role & Device Scoping: The Balka kids tablet runs on restricted API tokens with read/write access strictly limited to routine checkboxes and daily timetable endpoints, completely isolating all financial, legal, and medical records from the child-facing surface.
- Local-First Performance: By relying on PostgreSQL JSONB for flexible module attributes combined with strict typed SQLAlchemy async queries, complex dashboard aggregations execute in under 50 milliseconds directly on homelab hardware.
Key Takeaways
Consolidating personal life administration into a single, sovereign database eliminates reliance on commercial SaaS tools. The modular monolith pattern provided the optimal trade-off: unified backups and zero network latency between modules, paired with strict domain isolation and clean code organization.
